Since it’s formation in 1964, BMC has become Turkey’s largest commercial
vehicle manufacturer and has support outlets worldwide.
The
company is based in Izmir, Turkey’s third largest city, and was
originally a subsidiary of the British Motor Corporation before becoming
an independent Turkish Company. BMC originally built Austin and Morris
light commercials under license but rapidly expanded to produce a full
range of vans, trucks and diesel engines.
In
1976 a new foundry, with a capacity of 21,000 tons per year, was opened
and began producing all the components needed for full in-house
manufacturing and truck production passed 10,000 units per annum.
In
1986 BMC formed a strategic alliance with the Cummins Engine Company
allowing them to produce Cummins diesel engines under licence in
Turkey. This alliance with Cummins continues right up to the current
range of Euro 4 engines and to date BMC have produced over 60,000
Cummins engines.
In
1989 BMC was acquired by Cukurova
Holdings, Turkey’s largest industrial conglomerate which currently
has a turnover of $9.1 billion US Dollars and employs 34,000 people.
Cukurova has interests in many industries ranging from automotive,
paper, chemicals, textiles, telecoms, construction, banking, media and
IT.
In
1990 BMC signed a co-operation agreement with Italian design house
Pininfarina – the company responsible for styling the Ferrari car range
– and BMC and Pininfarina are currently working on a new BMC truck range
due to be launched in 2008.
Currently BMC produces 22,000 vehicles per year from its 2 million sq ft
factory in Pinarbasi, Izmir with a highly skilled and motivated
workforce of 3,000 dedicated people equipped with the latest production
equipment. BMC have a large in-house engineering department able to
fully design and test all aspects of the vehicles they produce. The
robust design of BMC trucks and specialist vehicles make them ideal for
armed forces around the world and BMC currently meet all NATO quality
standards.
In
addition to the main Pinarbasi plant, BMC have a separate 500,000 sq ft
bus and coach factory that produces 3,000 vehicles per year. BMC
coaches and especially school buses are now an increasingly common site
throughout the UK.
This
bus and coach factory produces the new BMC Municipal low entry range on
a separate dedicated production line.
The
BMC parts distribution centre supports BMC operators and dealers in over
50 countries world wide from its 100,000 sq ft facility. A large stock
of parts is also held in the UK to support the dealer network.
Today
BMC is one of only three European manufactures that produce a full range
of vehicles in all categories from 2.8 tonnes up to 44 tonnes for the
transport of goods and passengers. With the financial strength of its
parent company, Cukurova Holdings, BMC is on course to become one of the
top ten global truck manufactures within the next ten years. |
